Between A Rock and a Hard Life - Daniel Bernoulli and the Law of Hydrodynamic Pressure (Kevin Mathews Tharakan's 2nd Post)

Even at such an young age Daniel Bernoulli was a able to win 1st place with his father. The son had admired him so much that it influenced Bernoulli to become who he was. However, after seeing that his son had become equal to him, Bernoulli's father got mad and from there on had an interesting, but difficult relationship. Neither one realized how heavily they influenced each other, their pride got in the way, because they wanted individual credit. When I first read this, I merely could not believe it because how the father reacted. I have never actually met a father who was not proud of this son or daughter even after they grew up to be as good as the father even at a young age; if I was in the shoes of this father, I will not be happy but ecstatic. The problem, in my opinion at least, lies in the fact that father, who was so busy of being jealous, failed to realize that he was the one who helped his son and made him who he was. Just think about what they could have achieved if they had put away their jealousy and worked together. What do you this of this issue? I also did not like that the father took credit for something that took Bernoulli almost his whole life to develop. That is one of the reasons that I live in a society where such things cannot happen. What they can do, is that if someone complains that someone else stole their idea, they can use your proof of work, like the things you wrote down (lab journal) and they will do a similar form of carbon dating on the ink and will figure out who came up with the idea. But at least the people who named the principal named it after the family name not the specific person.

I think Daniel's father never wanted his son to be a mathematician in the first place; he wanted him to be a merchant, this probably contributed when his father was mad at him. But I still don't understand like you said, why his father took the credit for Daniel's biggest achievement in his career, Daniel had even written on the frontispiece "by Daniel Bernoulli, son of Johann". Competition back then was fierce and the bond between father and son wasn’t good. I'm pretty glad we don't live in that time period.
