Daniel Bernoulli - Between a Rock and a Hard Life

Bernoulli's relationship with his dad was very surprising to me... I didn't really believe that a father could have been so jealous and so caught up with his own desires that he would even try to outrun his own son. Daniel Bernoulli did not want to be severed from his roots. He wanted to be like his father, follow his footsteps so that he would be proud of him, just like the way he was proud of his father. But the father was so afraid that Daniel would be equal to him and be admired like him that he didn't even care about his dreams. He did not let Daniel do what he liked and wanted to do because of his jealousy. He even plagiarized Daniel's ideas and took credit for them. What kind of father can even think of doing such things? Aren't fathers supposed to encourage them to follow their dreams? Shouldn't they just be proud of their children's success?
