Daniel Bernoulli - Between a Rock and a Hard Life

In my opinion I think Daniel Bernoulli’s father never wanted anyone to achieve what he achieved or even surpass him especially his own son. Even though his father influenced Daniel into mathematics, Johann Bernoulli never wanted him to become a mathematician, to even follow in his footsteps which many parents want. Johann wanted his son to become a merchant which is ironic because Nicolaus, Johann’s dad also didn’t want Johann to become a mathematician. Without these two mathematicians the world wouldn’t be the same, they both had influenced each other and made each other better. It was also interesting how these two men had different perspectives about math. One idolizes Newton and is influenced by him, which is Daniel and Johann doesn’t, he believes in Leibniz. But what I don’t understand is why Johann was so furious when both he and his son won the award? His son surpassed him as a mathematician which got to Johann. But, why? He is your son, he followed your footsteps, and he became who he was because of you? So why is he jealous? Daniel still admired his father he wrote on the frontispiece of his book, “Hydrodynamica, by Daniel Bernoulli, son of Johann”, which I think is nice. But even then Johann even deprived his son of his monumental breakthrough by writing a book similar to his son called Hydraulica; he also used points from his son’s book. It shows how fierce competition used to be back then, that it can even rip apart father and son. This shows a little bit about history.
